Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
