The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
